மதுரை கூடலழகர் பெருமாள் கோயில் என்பது 108 வைணவ திவ்ய தேசங்களில் 101வது திவ்ய தேசமாக சிறப்புப் பெற்றது. இக்கோயிலில் மட்டுமே பிரசித்தி பெற்ற பல்லாண்டு பாடல் மதுரையில் இயற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பது தனிச்சிறப்பாகும். இத்தலத்தை பெரியாழ்வார், திருமங்கையாழ்வார், திருமழிசையாழ்வார் ஆகியோர் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்துள்ளனர்.

வரலாறு:
பிரம்மாவின் மகன் சனத்குமாரர் மனிதரூபத்தில் பெருமாளை காண விரும்பி இங்கு கடும் தவம் செய்தார். பெருமாள், ஸ்ரீதேவி, பூதேவியுடன் அவருக்கு காட்சி அளித்து, விஸ்வகர்மா அவருக்கு அதேபோல் சிலை உருவாக்கி அஷ்டாங்க விமானத்தின் கீழ் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்தார். பெருமாளுக்கு “கூடலழகர்” என்ற பெயர் இதனால் பெற்றது. மதுரை நகரத்தை சுற்றி நான்கு மேகங்களை ஏவி மழையில் இருந்து பாதுகாத்ததால் இத்தலம் “நான்மாடக் கூடல்” என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

கோயிலின் சிறப்பு அமைப்புகள்:
125 அடி உயரம் கொண்ட அஷ்டாங்க விமானம், பஞ்சபூததத்துவங்களைக் குறிக்கும் ஐந்து கலசங்கள், எட்டு பிரகாரங்கள் கொண்ட கட்டிடக்கலை இது தனித்துவம் வாய்ந்ததாகும். இக்கோயிலில் நவகிரக சன்னிதியும் அமைந்துள்ளது.

திருவிழாக்கள்:
வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி, நவராத்திரி போன்ற விழாக்கள் சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடப்படுகின்றன. திருமணத் தடை நீங்க, குழந்தை பாக்கியம் பெற, கல்வி முன்னேற இங்கு பக்தர்கள் பிரார்த்தனை செய்கிறார்கள்.

Madurai Koodal Azhagar Perumal Temple is revered as the 101st Divya Desam among the 108 Vaishnavite Divya Desams. It holds the unique distinction of being the only temple where the sacred hymn Pallandu was composed in Madurai itself. This holy site received divine praises from Periyalwar, Thirumangai Azhwar, and Thirumazhisai Azhwar.

Historical Significance:
Sanathkumarar, son of Brahma, desired to see the deity in human form and performed penance here. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Azhagar appeared with Sridevi and Bhudevi. The divine idol was sculpted by Vishwakarma and installed under the Ashtaanga Vimana. The deity is thus called Koodal Azhagar, meaning the Lord who controls the confluence of clouds. Legend says the temple got its name because the Lord sent four clouds to protect Madurai from heavy rains, creating the “Four Clouds Koodal” or “Koodal City.”

Architectural Highlights:
The temple features a 125-foot tall Ashtaanga Vimana with an 8-part, 3-tier structure symbolizing the Ashtaakshara Mantra. It is one of the rare temples (along with Thirukoshtiyur) to have this architectural marvel. The five-tiered Rajagopuram with five kalashas represents the Pancha Bhoota elements.

Cultural and Religious Importance:
The temple hosts a Navagraha shrine dedicated to worshipping nine planets with a unique dasavathara sloka. Festivals like Vaikunta Ekadasi and Navaratri are grandly celebrated. Devotees seek blessings here for marriage, children, and education.
