வையம் காத்த பெருமாள் கோயில், தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டம், பாபநாசம் வட்டம், திருக்கூடலூரில் அமைந்துள்ள 108 திவ்ய தேசங்களில் 8வது திவ்யதேசம் ஆகும். இது திருமங்கையாழ்வார் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்த தலம் (பெரிய திருமொழி – 10 பாடல்கள்) ஆகும்.

அசுரன் இரண்யாட்சகன் பூமியை பாதாளத்தில் மறைத்ததால், திருமால் வராக அவதாரம் எடுத்து பூமியை மீட்டார். இதனால் இத்தல பெருமாளை வையம் காத்த பெருமாள் என அழைக்கின்றனர். நந்தக முனிவர் தேவர்களுடன் இங்கு வழிபட்டதால், “கூடலூர்” எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது.

தாயாருக்கு தனிச் சந்நிதி, பெருமாள் கிழக்கே செங்கோலுடன் நின்ற கோலத்தில் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். பலா மரத்தில் சங்கு வடிவம் காணப்படும், இது சக்கராயுதம் தொடர்புடையது.

அம்பரீஷன் நாட்டு இழந்த போதும் திருமாலை வழிபட்டதை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு, இங்கு அம்பரீஷ வரதர் என்ற பெருமாளுக்குச் சிறப்பு. துர்வாச முனிவரைக் காக்க சக்கராயுதம் ஏவிய வரலாறு இத்தலத்தில் நிகழ்ந்ததாகும்.

வைகாசி பிரம்மோற்சவம், ஸ்ரீசுக்த ஹோமம், பௌர்ணமி பூஜைகள் மிகவும் சிறப்பாக நடக்கின்றன. இத்தலத்தில் வழிபாடு செய்தால் பாதுகாப்பும் செல்வ வளமும் கிடைக்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.

Vaayam Kaatha Perumal Temple, located in Thirukkoodalur near Papanasam, Thanjavur district, is the 8th Divya Desam among the 108 sacred Vaishnavite shrines. It is also known as Aaduthurai Perumal Temple or Sangama Kshetram, where the rivers meet.

According to legend, the demon Hiranyaksha hid Earth in the netherworld. Lord Vishnu took the Varaha (boar) form, split the earth here, and rescued Bhoomi Devi. Hence, He is known as Vaayam Kaatha Perumal, “the one who protected the world.”

The sage Nandaka and celestials worshipped Perumal here, giving the place the name “Thirukkoodalur” (place of divine gathering). Goddess Padmasani Thayar has a separate shrine. The Shankha-shaped mark on the jackfruit tree near the sanctum signifies the Sudarshana Chakra that chased Sage Durvasa during King Ambarisha’s episode.

Ambarisha, a great devotee, built this temple after being saved by Lord Vishnu from Sage Durvasa’s curse. Hence, the deity here is also known as Ambarisha Varadar.

The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram, and the Lord stands facing east with a royal scepter (sengol) in hand.

Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, Sri Sukta Homam with 108 lotuses on Pournami, and other monthly festivals draw many devotees who seek protection and prosperity through Perumal’s grace.
