கபிஸ்தலம் கஜேந்திர வரதப் பெருமாள் கோயில், தஞ்சை மாவட்டத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள 108 வைணவ திவ்ய தேசங்களில் 9வது தலமாக போற்றப்படுகிறது. திருமழிசையாழ்வார் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்த இத்தலம், பஞ்ச கிருஷ்ண திவ்ய தேசங்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.

இந்த தலத்தில் மட்டும் திருமால் முதலைக்கும், யானைக்கும் அருள் செய்துள்ளார். இந்திராஜும்னன் என்ற மன்னன், துர்வாச முனிவரின் சாபத்தால் கஜேந்திர யானையாக பிறக்கிறார். அகத்திய முனிவரின் சாபத்தால் முதலை ஆன கூஹு அரக்கனும், கபில தீர்த்தத்தில் யானையின் காலைக் கடிக்க, திருமால் “ஆதிமூலமே” என்ற அழைப்புக்கேற்ப தோன்றி, யானையை காப்பாற்றி மோட்சம் அளிக்கிறார். இதுவே கஜேந்திர மோட்சம்.

பெருமாள் கிழக்கே நோக்கி புஜங்க சயன நிலையில் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். இங்கு ராகு, கேது தோஷ நிவாரணத்திற்கும், ஞானம், வாழ்வில் முன்னேற்றம் வேண்டியும் பக்தர்கள் தரிசனம் செய்கிறார்கள்.

வைகாசி விசாகம், ஆடி பௌர்ணமி (கஜேந்திர மோட்சம்) போன்ற திருவிழாக்கள் சிறப்பாக நடைபெறுகின்றன. ஆஞ்சநேயருக்கு ஞானச் சிரஞ்சீவி பட்டம் இத்தலத்தில் வழங்கப்பட்டது என்பதால், இங்கு வழிபாடு செய்வது, வாழ்க்கை மேன்மைக்கும், நோய்கள் விலகவும் சிறந்ததாக கருதப்படுகிறது.

Gajendra Varadha Perumal Temple in Kabisthalam, Thanjavur district, is the 9th Divya Desam among the 108 Vaishnavite shrines. It is one of the Pancha Krishna Kshetras, glorified by Thirumazhisai Azhwar.

This is the only Divya Desam where Lord Vishnu gave darshan to both an elephant (Gajendra) and a crocodile. King Indrajumnan, due to Sage Durvasa’s curse, was reborn as Gajendra, the elephant. A demon named Kuhu, cursed by Sage Agastya, became a crocodile in Kapila Theertham. When the crocodile caught Gajendra’s leg, the elephant cried out “Adimoolame!” and Lord Vishnu appeared with Lakshmi, destroyed the crocodile, and granted salvation (moksha) to Gajendra—known as the Gajendra Moksham.

The Lord is in Bhujanga Sayanam, facing east. This temple is also renowned for Rahu-Ketu Dosha Nivarthi, and for blessings of wisdom and liberation.

During the Vaikasi Visakam Brahmotsavam and Aadi Pournami, the Gajendra Moksha festival is celebrated with grandeur. Thousands of devotees participate in the processions and special pujas.

It is believed that worshipping here grants relief from planetary afflictions, peace of mind, and spiritual wisdom, especially since Lord Vishnu blessed Hanuman here with eternal knowledge and powers, hence the name Kabisthalam (Kapi = Hanuman).
