திருச்சேரை சாரநாதப் பெருமாள் கோயில், 108 வைணவ திவ்ய தேசங்களில் 15-வது தலமாக பெருமை பெற்றுள்ளது. இத்தலத்தில் பெருமாள் ஸ்ரீதேவி, பூதேவி, மகாலட்சுமி, நீலாதேவி, சாரநாயகி என ஐந்து தேவியருடன் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். இது திருமால் மிக விரும்பிய க்ஷேத்ரமாகும்.

இக்கோயிலை திருமங்கையாழ்வார் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்துள்ளார். மூலவர் சாரநாதன், தாயார் சாரநாயகி (பஞ்ச லட்சுமி). தீர்த்தம் சார புஷ்கரிணி, விமானம் சார விமானம்.

தல புராணம் கூறுவது: கங்கைக்கு கிடைத்த பெருமையை கோரிக் கெளவேரி தாய் தவமிருந்தாள். திருமால் ஐந்து தேவியருடன் காட்சி தந்து வரம் அளித்ததால், இன்று தாயார் பக்கத்தில் கெளவேரி தாயும் இருப்பார். இதே கோலத்தில் என்றும் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே கோரிக்கை.

பிரளய காலத்தில் வேதங்களை பாதுகாக்க பூமியில் மண் தேடி வந்த பிரம்மா, சரமானமிக்க இத்தலத்தில் மட்டுமே குடம் செய்து வேதங்களை ஆவாஹனம் செய்தார். அதன் அடிப்படையில் இத்தலம் “திருச்சாரம்” எனவும் பின்னர் “திருச்சேரை” எனவும் பெயரானது.

5 ஏக்கரில் விரிந்துள்ள இக்கோயிலில் 90 அடி உயர ராஜகோபுரம் உள்ளது. சீனிவாசப் பெருமாள், நம்மாழ்வார், நரசிம்மர், ஆண்டாள், ருக்மணி, சத்யபாமா, பால சாரநாதர் போன்றோர் தனிச் சந்நிதிகளில் உள்ளனர்.

தைப்பூச திருவிழா மற்றும் திருவோண திருநாள்கள் சிறப்பாக நடைபெறுகின்றன. 12 வருடங்களுக்கு ஒருமுறை தை மாதம் பூச நட்சத்திரம் வியாழனில் வரும் போது சார புஷ்கரிணியில் நீராடுவது மகா மகத்துக்கு இணையானது.

Thirucherai Saranatha Perumal Temple in Thanjavur district is celebrated as the 15th Divya Desam among the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desams. Here, Lord Saranatha Perumal blesses devotees with five consorts: Sridevi, Bhudevi, Mahalakshmi, Neeladevi, and Saranayaki. This sacred site is revered by Lord Vishnu himself as his most beloved Kshetram.

Thirumangai Alvar has composed hymns (Mangalasasanam) in praise of this Divya Desam. The main deity is Saranathan, and the consort is Saranayaki, also known as Pancha Lakshmi. The temple tank is Sara Pushkarini, and the Vimanam is Sara Vimanam.

Legend says River Kaveri performed penance here, desiring the same honor as River Ganga. Pleased, Lord Vishnu appeared on Garuda Vahanam with his five consorts and granted her a boon. This is why Kaveri is seen beside the Lord in the sanctum.

The name “Thirucherai” is derived from the term “Thirucharam,” referring to the sacred essence of the land used to protect the Vedas by Brahma during Pralaya. Lord Vishnu directed Brahma to collect clay from here, as all other attempts failed elsewhere.

The temple spans 5 acres, features a 90-ft Rajagopuram, and is 1000+ years old. It houses shrines for Alvars, Vishnu avatars, and unique icons like Srinivasa Perumal and Utsava idols of all 108 Divya Desams.

Thiruvona star festivals and Thai Poosam Brahmotsavam are major celebrations here. A holy dip in Sara Pushkarini during the rare Guru Peyarchi on Thai Poosam grants blessings equivalent to the Mahamaham festival.
