21-Soundararaja Perumal

சௌந்தர்ராஜப் பெருமாள் கோயில் 21-வது திவ்யதேசமாக மதிக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆதிசேஷனின் தவமும், திருமாலின் சயனமாக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப்பட்ட இத்தலம், ‘நாகன்பட்டினம்’ என்ற பெயரை உருவாக்கி, பின்னர் நாகப்பட்டினமாக வளர்ந்தது.

திரேதாயுகத்தில் பூமாதேவி, துவாபரயுகத்தில் மார்கண்டேயர் இத்தலத்தில் தவம் செய்தனர். திருமங்கையாழ்வார் பெரிய திருமொழியில் இக்கோயிலை மங்களாசாசனம் செய்துள்ளார். மூலவர்: நீலமேகப் பெருமாள், உற்சவர்: சௌந்தர்ராஜப் பெருமாள், தாயார்: சௌந்தரவல்லி (கஜலட்சுமி).

தல விருட்சம்: மாமரம், தீர்த்தம்: சார புஷ்கரிணி, ஆகமம்: பாஞ்சராத்ர ஆகமம், விமானம்: சௌந்தர்ய விமானம் ஆகியவை இத்தலத்தின் முக்கிய அம்சங்கள்.

குமாரன் துருவன் உலகுக்கு ஆதிகாரி ஆக வேண்டிய ஆசையுடன் இங்கு தவம் புரிந்தான். கருட வாகனத்தில் வந்து பெருமாள் சௌந்தர்யம் காட்டி அருளியதால், பெருமாள் சௌந்தர்ராஜ பெருமாளாக பெயர்பெற்றார்.

கோயிலில் 5 அடுக்கு ராஜகோபுரம், பலி பீடம், கருடாஞ்சலி, மற்றும் தசாவதார மலையால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட மூலவர் சிறப்பாக உள்ளனர். அஷ்டபுஜ துர்கை மற்றும் 8 கரங்களுடன் நரசிம்ம பெருமாள் கூட இங்கே வணங்கப்படுகிறார்கள்.

ஆதிசேஷன், துருவன், திருமங்கையாழ்வார், சாலிசுக சோழன் போன்ற முக்கிய பக்தர்களின் வழிபாடு இத்தலத்தின் ஆன்மீக உயர்வை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.

Soundararaja Perumal Temple is revered as the 21st Divya Desam. This sacred shrine is famous as the place where Adisesha performed penance and where Lord Vishnu rested, giving the town its original name “Naganpattinam”, later evolved as Nagapattinam.

The temple holds great significance in Treta Yuga and Dwapara Yuga, where Goddess Bhudevi and Sage Markandeya performed penance. The saint Thirumangai Alvar has sung its praises in his Periya Thirumozhi. The presiding deity is Neelamegha Perumal, and the processional deity is Soundararaja Perumal. The consort is Soundaravalli (Kajalakshmi).

The sacred Ma tree (Thala Virutcham) and the holy tank called Saar Pushkarini are integral to this temple, which follows the Pancharatra Agama and houses the beautiful Soundarya Vimana.

Legend tells of Prince Dhruva, who meditated here to attain dominion over the universe. The divine Lord Vishnu appeared on his Garuda mount, revealing his unmatched Soundarya (beauty), and blessed Dhruva with eternal darshan. This is why the deity is called Soundararaja Perumal.

Architecturally, the temple features a majestic Rajagopuram, a sacrificial altar, and a unique sanctum where the deity faces east with a dazzling Dashavatara ornamented garland. The temple also houses shrines for Ashtabhuja Durga, and an eight-armed Narasimha form blessing devotees.

Famous devotees like Adisesha, Dhruva, Thirumangai Alvar, and Salisuka Chola have worshipped here. This temple is a vital spiritual landmark for Vaishnavite pilgrims visiting Nagapattinam.
