திருத்தண்கா (தூப்புல்) விளக்கொளி பெருமாள் கோயில், 108 திவ்ய தேசங்களில் 45-வது திவ்ய தேசமாகும். இது வேதாந்த தேசிகர் அவதாரத் தலமாகும், அவரை ஸர்வதந்த்ர ஸ்வதந்த்ரர் என்றும் அழைக்கிறார்கள்.

இங்கு பெருமாள் திருநாமம் விளக்கொளி பெருமாள் அல்லது தீபப்பிரகாசர். பிரம்மதேவர் யாகம் நடத்தும் போது சரஸ்வதியின் மாய நலன் உலகை இருளாக்க, திருமால் ஒளிவிளக்குடன் தோன்றி இருளை நீக்கினார். இதனால் பெருமாள் “விளக்கொளிப் பெருமாள்” என்ற பெயரால் அறியப்படுகிறார்.

திருமங்கையாழ்வார் இத்தலத்தில் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்துள்ளார். வேதாந்த தேசிகர் கிபி 1268-ல், புரட்டாசி மாதம் திருவோணம் நட்சத்திரத்தில் பிறந்தவர். தமிழ், வடமொழி, மணிப்பிரவாளம், ப்ராக்ருதம் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் 124 நூல்களை அருளியுள்ளார்.

தேசிகருக்கு தனிச் சந்நிதி தாயார் சன்னதிக்கு அருகில் உள்ளது. அருகிலுள்ள லட்சுமி ஹயக்ரீவர் சன்னதி, தேசிகர் வழிபட்ட இடமாகும். ஆண்டாள், ஆழ்வார்கள், கருடன் ஆகியோருக்கும் தனிச்சந்நதிகள் உள்ளன.

திருவிழாக்கள்: ஆவணியில் வரதராஜப் பெருமாளுக்கு குடை சாத்தும் விழா, மார்கழி மற்றும் சித்திரை பௌர்ணமியில் தேசிகருக்கு மரியாதை நிகழும்.

Thiruthanka (Thoopul) Vilakkoli Perumal Temple, also known as Deepa Prakasa Perumal Temple, is the 45th Divya Desam among the 108 sacred Vishnu temples praised by Alwars. Located in Kanchipuram, this shrine is the birthplace of Swami Vedanta Desikan, a revered Vaishnava acharya known as Sarva Tantra Swatantrar.

The main deity is Vilakkoli Perumal (Deepa Prakasa), who appeared as a radiant form holding a divine lamp to dispel the darkness caused by the demon Maya, sent by Goddess Saraswati to obstruct Brahma’s yajna. Maragatha Valli Thayar blesses devotees from a separate sanctum. The temple tank is called Saraswati Theertham, and the vimana is known as Srikara Vimanam.

Thirumangai Alwar has sung hymns in praise of this temple. According to legend, Lord Vishnu helped Brahma continue his yajna by driving away the darkness, hence the name “Deepa Prakasa” – the Lord of Light.

Swami Desikan was born here in 1268 CE under the Thiruvonam star and later authored over 120+ works in Tamil, Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Manipravalam, including Paduka Sahasram, Hayagriva Stotram, Adhikarana Saravali, and Adhikaram Sangraham.

A separate shrine for Swami Desikan is located next to the Thayar Sannidhi. Nearby is the sanctum of Lakshmi Hayagriva, worshipped by Desikan himself.
